Roof Overhang Calculator
Step-by-step SOP for calculating the length of a roof overhang, fascia height, and soffit area from rafter span and pitch. Includes IRC R802.7 overhang limits and R806.2 soffit vent rules.
Roof Overhang Calculator: Parameter Generator
This is the eave calculator core of the SOP. Enter your rafter span, pitch, desired horizontal overhang, rafter depth, and building length — the panel returns live values for the length of the roof overhang along the rafter, the fascia height drop, the soffit area (both eaves), and the soffit vent count per IRC R806.2. The cut-list output box on the right is the equivalent of a "code block" for a DIYer — copy it to your phone or print it and take it to the saw.
🧮 Overhang Parameter Generator
SOP Step Wizard Overview: 7 Steps to a Weather-Tight Eave
This Standard Operating Procedure walks a framer or DIYer from raw measurements to a verified, weather-tight roof overhang in seven sequential steps. Each step carries a time estimate (3 min to 10 min), a critical-step or verification flag where it matters, and a specific output you must verify before moving on. The whole procedure runs about 34 minutes for a single eave on a 40' building, not including material staging.
The single hidden operation-order rule baked into this SOP: the fascia board must be installed before the soffit (Step 4 before Step 5), because the soffit panel's outer edge tucks into a groove or rebate routed into the back of the fascia. Skip this order and you have nothing to nail the soffit's outer edge to — the joint leaks and the soffit sags within a season. Every step below is grounded in IRC R802.7 (overhang framing) and R806.2 (soffit vent area); treat the cut list values as planning estimates and verify against your local IRC code edition before building.
Overhang Structure Breakdown: Rafter Tail, Fascia, Soffit, Drip Edge
A roof overhang (the eave) is built from four components that work together. The rafter tail extends past the wall plate and carries the load. The fascia boardis the vertical cap at the outer end of the rafter tail — it is what the gutter hangs from. The soffit is the horizontal panel that encloses the underside of the overhang against the wall. The drip edge is the bent metal flashing that bridges the roof deck and the fascia top, shedding water into the gutter. Get any one of these wrong and the whole assembly fails — the diagram below shows how they fit.
Diagram: The rafter tail extends past the wall plate; the fascia caps the outer vertical face; the soffit encloses the underside; the drip edge bridges roof deck and fascia top to shed water into the gutter.
Overhang by Pitch Reference Table
The overhang multiplier (1 ÷ cos(pitch angle)) converts any horizontal overhang to its length along the rafter. The table below lists the multiplier at common pitches from 2/12 to 12/12, plus the resulting overhang along the rafter and the fascia drop for a 12" horizontal projection. Use this table as a sanity check on the parameter generator above, or as a field lookup when you have no calculator handy. The relationship is exactly the kind of thing the diagram below makes visual.
Diagram: The same 12" horizontal overhang produces a longer rafter overhang and a taller fascia drop as pitch increases. At 12/12 the rafter overhang is 16.97" and the fascia drops a full 12".

IRC Overhang Limits: Min 6", Max 24"
IRC R802.7 governs conventionally framed roof overhangs. The prescriptive path allows up to 24 inches of horizontal overhang without engineering for typical rafter sizes and spacings. Beyond 24", the overhang must be carried by engineered outlookers, brackets, or ladder framing hung off the rake — the cantilever moment and wind uplift on a 36" overhang at 6/12 pitch can exceed 30 psf in exposure C, which conventional rafter tails cannot resist alone.
The code does not set a hard minimum, but building-science guidance (Lstiburek, BSC) recommends a minimum 6" overhang to protect siding and sheathing from rain wetting, with 12"–18" preferred in wet or freeze-thaw climates where 50–70% of wall wetting is eliminated versus a zero-overhang roof. Treat the 24" max and 6" min as planning estimates and verify with your local IRC code edition — some jurisdictions amend R802.7 for wind and snow load.
Max Overhang — 24"
IRC R802.7 prescriptive maximum horizontal projection for conventionally framed rafters. Beyond 24", switch to engineered outlookers or ladder framing. At 24" the cantilever moment is ~3× that of a 12" overhang on the same rafter.
Min Overhang — 6" recommended
Building-science minimum for moisture protection of walls. 12"–18" preferred in wet or freeze-thaw climates. Reduces rain-wetting of siding by 50–70% versus a roof with no overhang.
Soffit Vent Calculation per IRC R806.2
IRC R806.2 requires 1 sq ft of net free ventilating area (NFA) for every 150 sq ft of attic floor area, or 1/300 when a Class I vapor barrier is installed at the ceiling. The total vent area is normally split 50/50 between intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge or gable). An 8"×16" louvered soffit vent provides about 40 sq in of NFA, which is why the field rule of thumb works out to roughly 1 vent per 50 sq ft of soffit area for typical attics — this is the formula the parameter generator above uses:
For a 40' building with a 12" overhang on both eaves: soffit area = 1 × 40 × 2 = 80 sq ft, so vent count = Math.ceil(80 / 50) = 2 vents minimum per eave side. In practice, install 1 vent between every other rafter bay (24" o.c. vent spacing) for balanced airflow, then verify with a smoke test at the ridge — smoke should pull steadily out of the ridge vent within 60 seconds. Use continuous soffit vent strip for tight attics or vaulted ceilings where individual vents are impractical.
SOP Timeline: 7 Steps to a Complete Overhang
Work the steps in order — each step's output is the input to the next. Tick the checkbox on each card as you verify its output; the progress bar below tracks your overall completion. Steps flagged Critical Step will block later steps if skipped or done out of order, and the final step carries a Verification tag that confirms the whole assembly sheds water correctly.
Measure rafter span & verify pitch
Measure the horizontal rafter span wall-plate to wall-plate to the nearest 1/8". Verify the roof pitch with a speed square or pitch finder, and cross-check the X/12 value against your building plans. Time: ~3 min. Output: span (ft) and pitch (X/12) values recorded on a cut list.
Calculate overhang along rafter
Convert the desired horizontal overhang to length along the rafter: Overhang ÷ cos(pitch angle). For a 12" horizontal overhang at 6/12 pitch (26.57°): 12 ÷ 0.8944 = 13.42" = 1'-1-7/16". Use the parameter generator on this page for instant results. Time: ~1 min. Output: overhang length along the rafter, formatted to feet-inches-16ths.
Mark rafter tail cut
Transfer the calculated overhang length onto each rafter tail, measuring from the birdsmouth seat cut. Square a plumb mark across the top edge of the rafter at that distance — this is the tail cut line where the rafter ends and the fascia lands. Time: ~5 min. Output: cut mark line scribed on every rafter tail.
Install fascia board
Plumb-cut the rafter tails on the scribed lines. Nail the fascia board to the rafter ends with three 16d nails per tail. Use a 4' level to verify the fascia top edge is level along the eave run. HIDDEN ORDER INSIGHT: the fascia must be installed before the soffit because the soffit's outer edge tucks into a groove or rebate on the back of the fascia. Time: ~8 min. Output: fascia top edge verified level at every other rafter tail.
Cut & install soffit
Measure soffit panel width = horizontal overhang minus fascia thickness (typically 1" for 1x fascia). Cut soffit panels to length between rafter bays. Slide the outer edge into the fascia groove and nail the inner edge to a 1x2 ledger screwed to the wall. Time: ~10 min. Output: soffit area fully covered, no gap visible at the fascia joint.
Add soffit vents
Install soffit vents per IRC R806.2: roughly 1 vent per 50 sq ft of soffit area (an 8"x16" louvered vent provides ~40 sq in net free area each). Cut vent holes between rafter bays, snap the vents in place, and seal the edges with exterior caulk. Time: ~4 min per vent. Output: vent count placed and sealed — verify with a smoke test at the ridge.
Install drip edge
Bend D-profile drip edge (5"x2") over the fascia top and onto the roof deck edge. Overlap joints 2" minimum, drive roofing nails every 8"–12". The drip edge sheds water off the fascia and into the gutter. Time: ~3 min per 10' run. Output: drip edge overlaps locked, water runs freely into the gutter — verified by pouring a 1-gallon bucket of water at the ridge.
Pitfalls, Warnings & Shortcuts
💡 Tip: Cut all rafter tails to length before installing the fascia, using a string line snapped across the rafter tails as a level reference. A 100' mason line stretched between two temporary end blocks gets you within 1/16" of level over a 40' eave — far faster than leveling each tail individually with a 4' level, and the fascia will sit dead flat without shimming.
⚠️ Warning (Rollback): If Step 4 (Install fascia) takes longer than ~15 min per 10' run, or the fascia top edge is more than 1/4" out of level across 8 feet, STOP. Rollback: pull the fascia, re-check the rafter tail plumb cuts with a speed square, and re-cut any tail that is more than 1/8" off the scribed line. Installing the soffit over a crooked fascia locks the error into the assembly permanently and the soffit groove will not seal.
❌ Don't: Do not install the soffit before the fascia. The soffit panel's outer edge tucks into a groove or rebate on the back of the fascia board — that groove is the only structural support for the outer edge. Installing soffit first leaves the outer edge unfastened, which sags within one season and opens a gap that lets wind-driven rain and wasps into the eave cavity. Always follow the SOP order: fascia in Step 4, soffit in Step 5.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use the roof overhang calculator?▼
Enter your rafter span (ft), roof pitch (X/12), desired horizontal overhang (in), rafter depth (2x6/2x8/2x10), and building length (ft). The calculator instantly returns the overhang length along the rafter, the fascia height drop, the soffit area for both eaves, and the soffit vent count per IRC R806.2. For a 12' span at 6/12 pitch with a 12" overhang, the overhang along the rafter is 13.42" (1'-1-7/16") and the fascia drops 6.00" below the wall plate. These are planning estimates — verify with local IRC code.
What is the standard length of a roof overhang?▼
The typical length of a roof overhang is 12" to 18" of horizontal projection for residential gable and hip roofs. IRC R802.7 permits up to 24" of overhang without engineering for conventionally framed rafters. A minimum of 6" is recommended for siding and wall moisture protection. For wet climates 16"–24" is common; for dry climates 8"–12" suffices. At 24" the cantilever moment on a 6/12 rafter is roughly 3× that of a 12" overhang, so 24" is the practical maximum without outlookers.
How is overhang length calculated along the rafter?▼
Overhang along the rafter = horizontal overhang ÷ cos(pitch angle). For a 12" horizontal overhang at 6/12 pitch (26.57°), the rafter overhang = 12 ÷ 0.8944 = 13.42" = 1'-1-7/16". At 4/12 it is 12.65" (1'-0-5/8"); at 8/12 it is 14.42" (1'-2-7/16"); at 12/12 it is 16.97" (1'-4-31/32"). Use the overhang-by-pitch reference table on this page for fast lookup of the 1/cos multiplier at common pitches.
How do I calculate fascia height (fascia drop)?▼
Fascia height drop = horizontal overhang × tan(pitch angle). This is the vertical distance the fascia board sits below the wall plate at the rafter tail. For a 12" overhang at 6/12 pitch: 12 × tan(26.57°) = 12 × 0.5 = 6.00". At 8/12: 12 × 0.6667 = 8.00". At 12/12: 12 × 1.0 = 12.00". The total fascia board height needed = fascia drop + rafter actual depth (5.5" for 2x6). For 12" overhang at 6/12 with 2x6 rafters: 6 + 5.5 = 11.5", so use a 1x12 (11.25" actual) or 2x12 fascia.
What is the difference between an eave and a soffit?▼
The eave is the entire overhang assembly — the part of the roof that extends past the exterior wall. The soffit is the horizontal underside of the eave (the ceiling of the overhang), enclosed against the wall. The fascia is the vertical board at the outer edge of the eave that the gutters hang from. Use the eave calculator on this page to size all three components (rafter tail length, fascia height, soffit area) from one set of inputs in a single step.
How do I calculate soffit area?▼
Soffit area = horizontal overhang (ft) × building length (ft) × number of eave sides. For a 40' building with a 12" (1') overhang on both eaves: 1 × 40 × 2 = 80 sq ft of soffit material. Add 10% waste for cuts around rafter tails and corners, so plan for ~88 sq ft of soffit panel. Standard soffit panels are 12" wide × 12' long (12 sq ft per piece), so buy 8 panels for this job. The soffit calculator on this page does the math live as you change inputs.
How many soffit vents do I need?▼
Soffit vent count = Math.ceil(soffit area ÷ 50), following the common 1-vent-per-50-sq-ft rule derived from IRC R806.2 (1 sq ft net free ventilating area per 150 sq ft of attic, or 1/300 with a ceiling vapor barrier). For 80 sq ft of soffit, install Math.ceil(80/50) = 2 vents minimum (8"x16" louvered vents provide ~40 sq in net free area each). For tight attics use continuous soffit vent strip, and always pair soffit intake with ridge vent exhaust at a 50/50 split.
What size fascia board do I need?▼
Fascia board height must cover the rafter tail plumb cut, which equals horizontal overhang × tan(pitch angle) + rafter actual depth. For 2x6 rafters (5.5" actual) at 6/12 pitch with a 12" overhang: drop = 6.00", total plumb cut height = 5.5 + 6 = 11.5", so use a 1x12 (11.25" actual) or a 2x12 fascia. Standard fascia thickness is 1x (3/4") for trim-only applications and 2x (1.5") when the fascia also carries structural eave load or gutter weight above 6".
Can a roof overhang be too long?▼
Yes. IRC R802.7 limits conventionally framed overhangs to 24" of horizontal projection without engineering. Longer overhangs (36" or more) require engineered outlookers, brackets, or ladder-framing hung from the rake. Snow and wind-uplift loads multiply quickly on long overhangs: at 24" on a 6/12 roof the cantilever moment is roughly 3× that of a 12" overhang, and wind uplift on a 24" overhang can hit 30–40 psf in exposure C. Always verify overhang limits with your local IRC code edition.
Do I install the fascia or the soffit first?▼
Always install the fascia before the soffit. The soffit panel's outer edge tucks into a groove or rebate on the back of the fascia board, and the inner edge nails to a 1x2 ledger on the wall. If you install the soffit first, there is nothing to nail the outer edge to and the joint will leak. This is the single most common overhang framing mistake and the hidden operation-order rule built into Step 4 of this SOP.
What is the minimum roof overhang for moisture protection?▼
A minimum 6" horizontal overhang is recommended for siding and wall moisture protection in most climates. For wood siding or stucco, 12" minimum is preferred. IRC R802.7 does not specify a minimum, but building-science research (e.g., Joe Lstiburek, Building Science Corporation) shows 12"–18" overhangs reduce rain-wetting of walls by 50–70% versus a roof with no overhang. In hurricane zones, balance this against wind-uplift — 12"–16" is the sweet spot.
How does roof pitch affect overhang framing?▼
Steeper pitches amplify overhang length along the rafter: a 12" horizontal overhang becomes 12.65" along the rafter at 4/12, 13.42" at 6/12, 14.42" at 8/12, and 16.97" at 12/12. Steeper pitches also increase the fascia drop: at 12/12 a 12" overhang drops a full 12" vertically, requiring a much taller fascia board (1x12 minimum) and a longer rafter tail plumb cut. At low pitches (2/12–3/12) the overhang is nearly equal to the horizontal projection, but snow and water management become more critical.
